The largest credit union in the United States is Navy Federal Credit Union, with $204.4B in assets and 15.52M members on June 30, 2026, more than three times State Employees' Credit Union, the second largest, at $60.0B. Ten credit unions hold 19.2% of the assets of all federally insured credit unions, and the top hundred hold 48.3%, leaving a little over half for the other four thousand or so. Reaching the list takes $4.74B. Size says what an institution can afford to run, such as a national branch network or a large app team. It does not say that you can join, because most of these names still have a field of membership, and it says little about late loans, which can be higher at the top than the national rate.

What the ranking does and does not show

This is an order by assets, and nothing else. The file can hide a change of identity: the charter now filing as First Technology, in California, filed a year ago as Digital Federal Credit Union, in Massachusetts. Read the members figure against assets. Read the net worth ratio as a cushion, knowing that credit unions above $500 million also fall under a risk-based test that this table does not show.

Several of the largest are rooted in a single employer or service. Navy Federal’s page limits membership to the armed forces, the Defense Department, veterans and their families. Others have spread far from the name on the door, as our list of read membership rules shows. Where we could not read a rule on the credit union’s own page, we say so.

Where the largest are based

Size clusters. California has 15 of the top hundred, Texas 7, Washington 4. A few states have a dominant name: the tool above shows how much of a state’s total the top three hold. Virginia, North Carolina and Alaska stand out, while Maine has the most even field. On any state page the table shows the state’s largest, which are usually the ones a person living there can actually join.

Questions people ask

What is the largest credit union in the US?

Navy Federal Credit Union, based in Vienna, VA, with $204.4B in assets, 15.52M members and 388 branches, in the NCUA file of June 30, 2026. Its own page says its field covers the armed forces, the Defense Department, veterans and their families, so its size does not mean it is open to everyone.

What is the largest credit union anyone can join?

The answer depends on how you read “anyone”. Several large credit unions offer a route through an association or a foundation for people outside their usual field, and we list those we could read on the credit union’s own page. Terms change, and a route can have conditions, so confirm with the credit union before counting on it.

Which US credit union has the most members?

Navy Federal Credit Union, with 15.52M members. The next by members is State Employees' Credit Union, with 3.00M. Members and assets give slightly different orders, because some credit unions hold more per member. The table can be read in either order, and all figures come from the same quarterly filing.
