Strictly, no federal credit union is open to anyone: each one serves a field of membership, and the NCUA recognizes three kinds of federal charter, built on a single common bond, multiple common bonds, or a community. In practice, some credit unions offer a way in for people outside their usual field, usually by joining an association or a foundation, sometimes free. We read 17 credit unions’ own membership pages on November 2, 2026, and 7 of them describe such a route. The table gives what each page says, in our words, with its address. Where a page refused our reader, its conditions restrict that use, or we could not find the rule, we mark it not verified and the answer stays “to confirm with the credit union”. Terms change without notice, and the final word on any application is the credit union’s.

Not verified, because the site refused our declared reader or did not answer: Pentagon Federal Credit Union, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, Lake Michigan Credit Union, Police & Fire Federal Credit Union, GreenState Credit Union, Eastman Credit Union, Wings Credit Union, The Golden 1 Credit Union, VyStar Credit Union, Suncoast Credit Union, Texas Dow Employees Credit Union. Not verified, because the site’s conditions restrict robots, copying or reuse: Boeing Employees Credit Union, Alliant Credit Union, Patelco Credit Union, Idaho Central Credit Union, Redwood Credit Union, Desert Financial Credit Union. Not verified, because the rule did not appear in what we could read: Mountain America Federal Credit Union, America First Federal Credit Union, FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Teachers Federal Credit Union. We did not try another way in. For those, and for every other credit union in the file: to confirm with the credit union.

Conditions: we read each site’s robots.txt first. We found site-use terms or a legal notice, with no clause against this reading, for State Employees' Credit Union, United Nations Federal Credit Union, MidFlorida Credit Union, Consumers Credit Union, Hope Federal Credit Union. For the others in the table we found only privacy or disclosure notices, or none.

How fields of membership work

The NCUA’s page on field-of-membership expansion sets out three types of federal charter. They are single common bond, multiple common bond and community, and the type decides which groups or areas a credit union may serve. It describes occupational groups, based on an employer or a trade, associational groups, and a community as a geographic area meeting the NCUA’s definition of a well-defined local community or rural district. That page covers federal charters only. The official consumer page sums it up as employer, family, geographic location or group.

The name is no guide: Global Federal Credit Union lists two whole states and three counties, and American Airlines Federal Credit Union a whole industry. The quarterly file does not list the field.

What to weigh before joining through a route

An easy way in does not make a credit union right for you. Check that it is federally insured, read its net worth and delinquency in the tool above, and think about where you would actually use it. Compare its total cost with what you would save, and if the association charges yearly dues, ask who pays them after the first year. Then read how the joining process works. And if you already live or work in a credit union’s area, you may not need a route at all: start with your state.

Questions people ask

Is there a credit union that truly has no membership requirements?

We found none on the pages we read. Each one defines who qualifies, though some definitions are wide or include joining an association. A route like that can make eligibility close to universal in practice, but the credit union still decides on your application, including any checks it runs. The table gives each one’s own wording.

Do I have to pay to join through an association?

It depends. Andrews says its route is free, Service Credit Union lists a free way into two associations, and Redstone says joining its chapter is free. Hope asks a $10 membership fee, and others may ask for dues or a share deposit. Each credit union sets its own terms, so read the page before you open anything, and use the day-one calculator for the sum.

Why are some large credit unions not in the table?

Because their rules are not verified: their page refused our reader, their conditions restrict that use, or the rule did not appear, and we do not repeat them from other sites. That is the case for Pentagon Federal Credit Union, Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union, Lake Michigan Credit Union and others listed below the table. Their absence says nothing about whether you can join. Ask them directly.

Can my family join if I am a member?

Often, but not always. Several of the pages we read include immediate family or household members, among them First Tech, Star One and Redstone. The definition of family differs by credit union, and a roommate counts at some but not at others. The file reports no such rules at all, so check the membership page of the one you have in mind.
